Place where I put stuff that amuses me. Mostly geeky. Lots of pokemon, memes, and corgis. You have been warned.
I have been asked before but like a year ago lmao SO LETS TALK ABOUT THIS AGAIN
So okay, the crux of my Gale problem is this: he is a stock character. He is a bland quasi Nice Guy who contributes practically nothing to the plot to the point where he is essentially disposable to the story. He is shown to be someone Katniss associates with home and happiness (which we already have in Prim), someone who embodies friendship, district 12 and how it forms part of Katniss’ identity (which we have in they mayors daughter) and as a love interest (which we have in Peeta).
The only conceivable things he brings to the story is the love triangle - a completely useless and unnecessary addition to a story about THE DOWNFALL OF A DYSTOPIC SOCIETY - and that whole mockingjay mess, which like. do not get me started on that joke of a book
so i guess if you want it in bullet point form, Gale Hawthorne is:
- two dimensional and underdeveloped
- severely lacking in a personality
- a bitter, ultimatum giving ””’best friend”” who tries to vilify katniss for her actions in the arena, when she was trying NOT TO DIE
- a point in a love triangle?? apparently? when he is legit absent for the better part of two books in a three book series??
- the worst
Hello friends! This has somehow ended up on my dash and I only feel somewhat obligated to reply. For starters, it is totally OK that you don’t like Gale!!!!! I am not trying to turn this into a fight about ‘omg u can’t h8 gale’. I just feel that your assessment of him is, essentially, greatly uneducated and maybe a little biased (but I don’t really know that, do I?).
For starters, you point out that Gale is a ‘stock’ character, and then go on to bring up Madge (she has a name, by the way), and if you ask me she is more of a stock character than Gale is.
To say that Gale contributes nothing to the plot is entirely uneducated. Perhaps you forget that Gale saved a majority of the population of District 12, including Prim and Katniss’s mother. Without Gale we’d have Katniss without any family, without the very people she has fought tooth and nail to protect (to suggest that her only love stems from her ‘love’ from Peeta, is not essentially right, but she does love Peeta! That is an important pont). We also have Gale who, without really being asked, picks up two more mouths to feed to ASSURE that the two people Katniss cannot live without. So if you take Gale out, you take out the temporary survival of Katniss’s family. Gale, in a way, helps Katniss realize that she can’t run from the Capital or the problems in her life. When she chooses to stay with Gale in Catching Fire she is indirectly accepting that she is a piece in the rebellion (and directly addressing that a life with Peeta is the ‘Capital’s design’ and not hers, and thus suggesting that going against the Capital is a start of a rebellions. Which it obviously is). Without that, how much longer would it have taken for her to realize this?
Secondly, Prim is not necessarily ‘home’ to Katniss. Gale is the one person with whom she can be herself, this is even said by Katniss in the books. I also know of a good post about Gale and Katniss’s friendship that is an interesting read if you have an open mind about it! You can find it here if you’re interested.
Thirdly, and here’s where I’m going to get a lynch mob going, Peeta wasn’t even on her mind as someone to love until they’re in the arena the second time (where she did fall in love with him there, and we watched that happen and it was great). Gale and Katniss, maybe in not the most conventional way, loved each other. Maybe as close friends trying not to starve to death and reaping the benefits of providing for both their families by dividing their talents, or perhaps more. Katniss spends a majority of her time being torn between the two of them anyway.
I do, however, agree that the love triangle itself as perpetuated by pop culture’s media is entirely unnecessary. But that in itself does not negate Gale as an important character in the books!
Mockingjay is also, as I feel you are suggesting, Gale’s fault. It is quite literally Suzanne’s fault for telling us for two whole books that rebellion is the only progressive way to destroy an oppressive, totalitarian government, and then only to suddenly go ‘lmFAO JK GUYS REBELLION IS SHIT’.
Lacking in a personality? Well now you’re just grasping at straws you don’t have. Gale is dynamic and human —and maybe that’s where people get their disdain for him. Yes, he makes mistakes. Yes, he’s angry. Yes, he does things that are terrifying and show the ugliness of the human soul beneath the weight of a crushing oppression. But that’s what makes him more than two dimensional! He’s an ever evolving character, and truly doesn’t get enough credit in this fandom. I’d say he’s just a good a character as Katniss.
I don’t think Gale necessarily vilified Katniss (though I will say 92% of the fandom vilifies Gale without solid reason to —generally stemming from the silly notion that he was the Nice Guy. Though I could argue that Peeta was, but that’s a different conversation for a different time) for her actions. I think he was humanely frustrated with everything that was going on, which is OK!!!!!! It’s OK to be mad at a friend for doing things and not entirely understanding. Don’t tell me that you’ve never been mad at a friend before for something (though not as awful as killing because you had to stay alive).
"The Worst"? Well OK, that’s your opinion, and that’s alright.
In short, this is mostly just food for thought and I’ve had plenty of Gale haters jump on my posts before so I suppose I’m using that to justify this blurb. I’m not expecting you to change your mind on anything, but I’m just throwing this out there for people to read (to which I can hear people saying ‘well why the fuck didn’t you just start your own post?’ well, that’s a good question. I guess getting a little more attention this way is a bit more fun!?).
I was gonna add to this post, but I’ll just let Ashley take it from here.
You know what?
I don’t care if being a lesbian isn’t natural.
Its 2013. Oreos don’t have a single natural ingredient in them that isn’t distilled out of recognition. People get their vegetables from cans. They have made cruelty-free, lab-grown BACON. People fly around in big, metal machines.
I. AM. TALKING. TO SOMEONE. ACROSS THE WORLD. IN A MATTER OF SECONDS.
Not natural. Is not bad.
Your rhetoric is no longer a valid excuse for hate.
You finger yourself??? Disgusting. Those fingers should be turning pages of the holy bible
gotta get em wet before you turn the pages tho
this is going to be the text post that sends me straight to hell isnt it
